Averages

Readability Scores

  • Flesch Reading Ease - Scale of 0-100. Scores between 60-70 are considered ideal. Lower scores indicate harder-to-read text.
  • Flesch-Kincaid Grade - Indicates the US school grade level required to understand the text. For example, 8.0 means eighth grade. Scores above 12 indicate college level.
  • Automated Readability - Estimates the US grade level needed to understand the text. Uses character count instead of syllables. Lower scores indicate easier text.
  • Coleman-Liau Index - Estimates US grade level based on characters per 100 words and sentences per 100 words. Designed for machine calculation. Typical range: 5-15.
  • SMOG Index - Estimates years of education needed to understand the text. Particularly accurate for health-related materials. Typical range: 6-20.
  • Gunning Fog Index - Scores below 6 are easy to read, 7-8 is good for most audiences, 10+ indicates college-level text.
